The Microsoft KB article "Text in Drawing Does Not Appear Correctly When You Print to Adobe PDF Writer" covers this problem in detail at:

It appears that Microsoft blames Adobe for this problem. The best suggestion is to switch to a unicode font such as Arial Unicode MS.
